Inlays & Onlays

Dental professionals often use inlays or onlays when a significant portion of a tooth’s biting surface is damaged.

What are inlays and onlays?

Both can be made from materials like porcelain, gold, or composite and placed onto the tooth’s affected area. An inlay is used within the cusp area of the tooth, similar to a filling, while an onlay is a more substantial restoration that extends over multiple tooth cusps. While gold has been traditionally used for inlays and onlays, porcelain has become popular due to its strength and natural color-matching ability.

How are they applied?

The application of inlays and onlays involves two visits. During the initial appointment, the tooth is prepared, and an impression is taken to create a custom fit inlay or onlay at a dental laboratory. Then, a temporary sealant is applied, and a second visit is scheduled.

The temporary sealant is removed at the second visit, and the inlay or onlay is bonded to the tooth.

Compared to traditional fillings, inlays and onlays can significantly increase a tooth’s strength and last from 10 to 30 years. They can be an excellent alternative to a full crown in cases where the damage to the tooth does not warrant a full crown.
