Orthodontics

Orthodontics, a distinct specialty within dentistry, is dedicated to rectifying malocclusions, often referred to as ‘bad bites.’ Malocclusions occur when the jaws do not align properly, resulting in misaligned teeth and an inefficient bite, often leading to an unbalanced jaw appearance.

Orthodontists successfully adjust misaligned bites using braces and additional orthodontic tools, leading to a healthier and more visually appealing smile.

The causes of bad bites often stem from genetic factors such as crowding, protrusion, spacing, missing or extra teeth, and jaw growth issues. Additionally, problems may also arise due to the loss of primary or permanent teeth, thumb sucking, or accidents.

It is essential to seek prompt intervention for malocclusions, as misaligned and overcrowded teeth can cause dental health problems, including cavities, tooth loss, and periodontal disease. Furthermore, improper bites can result in uneven tooth wear, speech and chewing difficulties, and pressure on the gum tissue and supporting bones, leading to jaw joint problems.

In addition to the physical implications, a bad bite can significantly impact an individual’s self-esteem and confidence. Untreated malocclusions may lead individuals to hide their smiles or feel self-conscious. Moreover, delaying treatment for bad bites may necessitate more extensive and costly dental procedures.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist starting at seven, allowing for early detection and intervention of orthodontic issues.

Furthermore, adults can also benefit from orthodontic treatments. Approximately one in every five orthodontic patients is over 18 years old. Advanced orthodontic treatments have made braces a viable option for adults, offering increased comfort and reduced visibility.

Patients seeking solutions for malocclusions can choose from various braces, including Invisalign, which utilizes clear plastic aligners, traditional metal braces, and ceramic braces. These braces offer aesthetic appeal and adequate treatment quality. Yet, it is crucial to understand that Invisalign might not be sufficient for correcting severe or complex orthodontic conditions.
